September 1, 2009 Notice-Building Contractor Registration
As of July 1, 2009 construction businesses that work on commercial projects, projects covered by the Uniform Dwelling Code, electrical or plumbing projects, or swimming pools need a Building Contractor Registration issued by the WI Dept. of Commerce Safety and Buildings Division. This registration is for businesses, including one-person businesses, not for individual employees. Please visit http://commerce.wi.gov/SB/SB-BuildingContractorProgram.html for more information.
At this point, property owners who are owner-occupants will still be able to do work on their own property with the exception of plumbing work. All plumbing work must be done by a licensed plumber.
At this point the Dept. of Commerce is just trying to educate people about the need for contractors to hold this registration. Eventually, they will begin to assess fines for those working in these fields that do not comply with the requirements.
Residents of the City should protect themselves by asking to see the registration card of any contractor they hire.
